Kuwait is urged by Human Rights Watch to abolish the contentious sponsorship system

 
 
 

 The Human Rights Watch has accused Kuwait of continuing discriminatory practices against women and migrant workers, citing male guardianship over women and the abusive sponsorship system for workers, which often leads to serious violations such as wage ‘theft’, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

In a memorandum submitted to the Universal Periodic Review of Kuwait during the 49th session of the United Nations, the organization acknowledged Kuwait’s progress, including the introduction of a law protecting against domestic violence. However, it stated that these reforms are insufficient, particularly since Kuwait has not taken steps to protect the rights of the Bedoun (stateless) people. The organization criticized the sponsorship system (kafala), which ties the legal status of their workers to their employers, making it difficult for workers to seek redress and leaving them vulnerable to abuses, including wage theft and debts from illegal recruitment fees.

It also pointed out that migrant domestic workers remain excluded from Kuwait’s labor law, and the protections provided under the 2015 Domestic Workers Law are weaker and poorly enforced compared to the general labor law. Human Rights Watch recommended full implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, including amending laws to allow Kuwaiti women to pass their nationality to their children and spouses. Moreover, it called for a transparent process to address citizenship claims for the Bedoun or to establish a clear path to citizenship.

The organization also urged the abolition of the sponsorship system and the adoption of risk-based heat protection measures, such as the Wet Bulb Temperature Index, to create evidence-based work and rest schedules. Lastly, it called for strengthening the domestic worker's law to align with international standards and for Kuwait to ratify International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention No. 189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers.

Users of Gmail are vulnerable to an AI-driven hack

 
 
 

An AI-powered cyber-attack is targetting Gmail’s 2.5 billion account holders. The hackers reportedly reach out to Gmail users with a realistic AI scam call that claims to be from Google Support to trick them. 

Sam Mitrovic, a Microsoft solutions consultant, reported the scam in a blog posted recently describing what exactly happened. Mitrovic first received a notification asking him to approve a Gmail account recovery attempt which is a usual phishing method to obtain user login credentials. After ignoring the alert, Mitrovic received another notification that he had missed a call from Google Sydney which he ignored too. 

A week later, the same steps repeated with Mitrovic after which he picked up the phone call in which he was informed about suspicious activity in his Gmail account. The person claiming to be from Google Support said the attacker had downloaded Mitrovic’s account data.

The number from which he had received the call also appeared to be from a Google business page. 

Eventually, Mitrovic realised the voice on the phone call was AI-generated as it was too perfect and kept repeating “Hello” after every 10 seconds. 

The scam would have ideally moved towards capturing user credentials and used a type of session cookie malware that could bypass the two-factor authentication if implemented.

Kuwait Has Deported 130,000 Foreigners in the Last Four Years

 
 
 

Brigadier Jassim Al-Misbah, Director of the Deportation Department, announced that approximately 130,000 expatriates have been deported from Kuwait over the past four years. This significant number reflects the country's ongoing efforts to manage expatriate residency and compliance with local regulations.

Following a recent inspection of the old deportation prison (Talha) located in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, Brigadier Al-Misbah has ordered the immediate transfer of detainees to a newly constructed juvenile building. This facility is being developed in four phases, with the first phase for men now completed and 90% ready for occupancy.

The new facility is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 detainees, exceeding the capacity of the old facility, which could only hold around 900 individuals. According to Al-Misbah, the new building meets all required specifications and has the potential to house more than 1,400 detainees.

Al-Misbah emphasized that detainees are allowed to maintain contact with their families through landline phones. For international calls, prison phones are provided by the secretariats. Furthermore, detainees have the opportunity to meet with representatives from their embassies in a designated office.

To streamline airport procedures for deportees, a dedicated gate has been established in collaboration with airport authorities. Previously, deportees were required to enter through the same gates as regular passengers. The new arrangement ensures that necessary procedures are followed, allowing deportees to board without mixing with regular travelers.

Currently, the women’s section remains unchanged. However, Brigadier Al-Misbah indicated that plans are in place to transfer female detainees to the new facility within the next two months.
