Kuwait Is Developing New Energy Initiatives to Fulfill Increasing Summer Demand

The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has projected peak power loads to rise to 18,569 megawatts during the summer of 2025. This increase marks a rise of approximately 1,000 megawatts from the 2024 peak load of 17,640 megawatts. Despite this anticipated surge, ministry officials assure the public that scheduled power cuts will be avoided unless production units unexpectedly go offline.

Proactive Maintenance to Prevent Outages

The Ministry is undertaking proactive measures this winter to prepare power generation units across its stations for the summer. This effort aims to ensure all facilities operate at full capacity, minimizing the risk of outages as temperatures soar.

Impact of Extreme Summer Temperatures

Kuwait’s summer temperatures are expected to exceed 50°C, significantly increasing electricity demand. The installed energy capacity in 2023 reached 20,250 megawatts, which comfortably exceeds the forecasted 2025 demand. However, last summer saw power cuts due to unexpected outages at production units during peak heat.

Addressing Past Power Challenges

In 2024, outages occurred due to production unit failures amid record temperatures, forcing the ministry to implement programmed power cuts. For 2025, officials emphasize enhanced maintenance and operational readiness to handle peak demand without disruptions.

Projected Long-term Energy Needs

The ministry’s report predicts that energy demand will rise further to 19,441 megawatts by 2026. This increase, driven by population growth and urban expansion, highlights the need for sustained enhancements to Kuwait’s energy infrastructure.

Gulf Interconnection to Boost Supply

To meet growing energy needs, the ministry is negotiating an increase in imports from the Gulf Interconnection Grid. These imports are expected to rise from 700 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts during summer, providing additional stability to the grid.

Expanding Energy Production Capacity

The ministry is finalizing contracts to boost energy and water production. Plans are underway for over seven new projects at power stations, projected to add more than 13,700 megawatts to Kuwait’s capacity. These developments are part of a broader strategy to address rising demand and ensure energy security.

A Sustainable Future for Kuwait

By combining proactive maintenance, infrastructure expansion, and enhanced imports, the Ministry of Electricity aims to tackle the dual challenges of extreme temperatures and rising energy demands. These initiatives reflect Kuwait’s commitment to maintaining reliable electricity supply and supporting its growing population and economy.
