If you spot clumps of hair on your brush and shower drain every day, then you might be suffering from the issue of serious hair loss. Hair loss is a condition where the hair falls at an abnormal rate, consequently leading to partial or complete loss of hair. Medically known as alopecia, hair loss is characterized by partial baldness, thinning of hair or hair fall.

#1 Major Cause of Hair Loss - Hereditary (Androgenetic Alopecia).
This is a genetic predisposition to experience hair loss and thinning of hair. It is commonly known as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. In males, it leads to receding of hair line which is Grade I and slowly progresses to just a band of hair left at the base of scalp which is Grade VII. In females, there is widening of parting along with thin hair all over the scalp.

#2 Major Cause of Hair Loss – Hormonal
Hormonal imbalances are a major contributory factor especially in females. In such disorders there is Androgen (male hormone) excess, which leads to hair loss.

#3 Major Cause of Hair Loss – Post Pregnancy and menopause
These are physiological causes, but can be very alarming at times, if coupled with other causes of hair loss. This typically happens after 4-6 months of delivery

#4 Major Cause of Hair Loss - Health conditions linked to hair thinning
Thyroid disorders, anemia, long standing illness, post-surgical trauma are some other common medical conditions, which might be linked to hair loss and hair thinning.

#5 Major Cause of Hair Loss - Stress
This is an underlying current of hair thinning and hair loss these days. Be it physical, mental or emotional stress, it has a direct effect on the hair follicle health.

#6 Major Cause of Hair Loss – Extreme crash dieting
Crash dieting leads to sudden loss of weight; also, lack of proteins in diet, nutritional deficiencies like Vitamin B, D & iron can all affect hair health drastically and eventually can lead to thinning of hair.
Myths and Misconceptions about Hair Loss in Women.

  • Oil application: Many feel not enough oiling leads to hair loss or thinning. This is not true. Oiling only helps if accompanied with a massage.
  • Shampoo: It is not right to say that daily shampooing leads to hair fall. It doesn’t matter how often the scalp is washed. However, it is strongly recommended that you should go for a mild shampoo.
  • Wet hair combing: Many feel it leads to weakening of the roots. That is not true. Hair fall only happens if too much brushing or towel drying is done very aggressively. It should be very gentle.
  • Shaving and trimming: Many women shave off their heads, so that growth improves. Hair cutting and shaving have no impact on the hair follicle.
  • Salon activities like dyes, chemical treatments, and regular blow dryers can result in hair damage and breakage.
#1 Treatment Option for Hair Loss - Oiling is good for your hair
If you have scalp psoriasis and also dandruff then please do not oil your hair. As oil is like a meal for malasezia yeast that is the causative organism for dandruff. In case of hair fall, go for a few minutes of massage everyday, which leads to minor hair growth as the scalp is getting more blood. Best oils for hair massaging are jojoba oil, lavender oil, coconut oil and almond oil.

#2 Treatment Option for Hair Loss - Apply shampoo and conditioner the right way
When we use shampoo we don’t run it evenly all over our hair. The right way of applying shampoo is to take a little bit of it (size of a single popcorn) and then rub it evenly all over the hair. Aim at rubbing into your hair from the roots and then massaging it down to the roots. As far as the use of conditioners is concerned, go for something which suits your hair type. Wrap a hot towel around your hair in order to get best results.

#3 Treatment Option for Hair Loss – Vitamin nourishment for your hair
Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, primarily leafy vegetables, will help curb hair loss. Spinach, fenugreek and Indian gooseberry are hair friendly food items and should be eaten in good quantity.

#4 Treatment Option for Hair Loss – Eggs also help in preventing hair loss
Beat two eggs and add two tablespoons of water to it. Apply this mixture to wet hair and let stay there for 10 to 15 minutes. Now, rinse the hair with normal temperature water or lukewarm water preferably.

#5 Treatment Option for Hair Loss – Amla might help in preventing hair fall
Make a paste of amla or take amla powder and mix it in water. Apply this to your hair to improve the colour and texture of your hair. Amla will also have a cooling effect in your head and will relieve your entire system.

#6 Treatment Option for Hair Loss - Hair transplant may also be performed
This works the best for androgenetic alopecia. Hair roots from the back of the scalp are extracted and implanted in the bald areas. Results are permanent and are often advised by doctor’s looking at the case-specific patient’s details. Laser Combs are available, which stimulate the hair follicles and are preventive in nature. Minoxidil application is good as long as it is used consistently. Mesotherapy is another technique where essential nutrients and hair growth factors are injected with micro injections into the scalp.
