Bengaluru resident’s Facebook post helped Chennai flood victims
As Chennai is battling the devastating floods, thousands of people are lending a helping hand to the victims in this hour of crisis. Good Samaritans are using every means to reach out to the people of Chennai, where there is an acute shortage of essential items. Facebook and Twitter have become an effective media to arrange relief commodities. A Bengaluru resident, named Ram Kashyap, is shuttling between Bengaluru and Chennai with food supplies and other essentials items.
He posted the idea of donation for the victims on his Facebook page on December 2. The response was overwhelming. He accepted donations for food supplies, containers, paper cups, plates, rain coats, umbrellas and money for fuel. Kashyap successfully completed his first trip to Chennai on December 3.
His second trip was scheduled for December 4, and the post got so widely shared that he managed to arrange 20 cars and three trucks. Because of a successful social media campaign, the commodities to be supplied in Chennai also included baby care, first aid kits, motorcycle tubes and air pumps.
Kashyap, along with his friends, has set up 14 drop-points in Bengaluru for people to donate and has created Google documents for all those who want to volunteer and partner with him to carry out his trips.
His post has been shared several thousand times on Facebook and he plans to undertake a couple of more trips till the situation returns to normal. He has set up a document with all the relevant information about his plan and donations for people who want to contribute.
