Three apps that can help you contribute to the society

Everyone reads about social responsibility and helping people in need. But only a few practise it in their day-to-day lives. This could be due to various reasons such as not finding a cause one would like to contribute to or a trusted channel. We need not go out of our way to help someone. Even a small gesture can completely change another person’s life. Here are some apps that can help you make a difference.

ShareTheMeal – Help children
Hunger is one of the biggest problems plaguing the world. According to World Hunger Programme, around 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life. This means that one in nine people on earth are suffering from malnutrition. Nearly half the deaths of children below five years are due to poor nutrition. To tackle this problem, United Nations has launched ShareTheMeal app through which you can “share your meal” with children in need. It costs only US$ 0.50 to feed 1 child for 1 day, says the app’s description. The app lets you feed a child with just a tap on your phone. You can make the payment through a PayPal account or credit card. The best part is that the app shows you where and to whom the meal has been distributed, and the overall impact.

Charity Miles
It’s good to be proactive about fitness and go walking, running or biking everyday. How about combining this with helping a cause? Charity Miles app enables you to earn money for a cause you care about. Here’s how it works: every time you walk or run, you earn 25 cents and every time you ride your bicycle, you earn 10 cents. All you have to do is to select the cause you care about from a list which includes World Wildlife Foundation, Alzheimer's Association, Wounded Warrior Project, Stand Up to Cancer and many others. Charity Miles ensures that the amount you earned is donated to the charity you chose.

Friends2Support.org
Friends2Support is a non-profit organisation that helps people contact blood donors. It has services available in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Yemen. The organisation was founded in 2005 to tackle the problem of blood unavailability at hospitals. Through the app, you can register as a blood donor or search for voluntary blood donors based on the locations provided. It also has a checklist of things you should do before and after donating your blood. You can also invite your friends through WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms to join the cause.
