Shri J. Jeyakrishnan belongs to a typical middle class Indian family and hails from Semmanjery, a Suburb in the city of Chennai, India. In the year 1996, he started a small construction firm, worked very hard and had brought up the firm.
Today, the firm is doing very well, has many branches and Jeyakrishnan is financially sound and stable. He felt that out of the hard earned money, he should spend at least 10 % towards education of the poor and not so fortunate students. Instead of being a mere preacher of such an idea to others, he wanted to implement it on his own first and be a role model for other good and kind hearted human beings, to emulate such deeds.
He categorically and unequivocally states that education is the foundation of all good things, to follow in one’s life. He firmly believes that education not only determines one’s future, it is the gateway to better standard of living.
Hence, to encourage competition in studies amongst school children, he arranged for ‘Competition Tests’ in couplets of “Thirukkural” (a Work about Life and Philosophy, dated between the Second Century BC and Eighth Century AD, by Sage Thiruvalluvar, comprising of one of the most highly admired and eloquent 1,330 numbers of couplets, containing advice to Mankind in Tamil Language and which has been widely translated into many Indian and other languages).
Later on, he adopted 35 poor children and took care of their entire educational expenses. Spurred on to do more, he started J.K. Foundation. During that time, he came to know about the ‘Tamil Nadu Government, Ministry of Education’s “School Adoption Scheme”. In Vilupuram District of Tamil Nadu State, he identified poorly scoring and badly performing 20 Government run Schools in Plus 2 examinations and adopted them.
To improve the average marks of the students, he employed 77 teachers and put them on a payroll. Moreover, to further improve students who did not fare and score well, he made arrangements for free meal and special coaching classes. Health and general fitness of students, besides cleanliness were given importance in addition to special classes for improving their mental health and outlook.
As a result of all the above improvements, 36 % results during the year 2011 – 2012 in School Final Plus 2 examinations, leapfrogged to 71 % during the year 2012 – 2013, a stupendous achievement of 100 % improvement and thus Vilupuram District improved its standing to 29th position, in Tamil Nadu State from 32nd position, in Plus 2 School examination results. One of the students, coached up by the above arrangements, secured 3rd Rank at District level and 10th Standard Class results too doubled and 6,500 numbers of students, have so far benefitted, due to his benevolence.
In this age of self-serving and get-rich-quick scams by individuals and schools seeking cream students, it needs real character to care for poorly performing and economically backward students. Indian Frontliners, Kuwait salute J. Jeyakrishnan and wish him all the best in his endeavours and pray for his continuing success and help to student community.
