IISM – INNER WHEEL, A SESSION ON “PUBERTY IN GIRLS”
Taking the onus of tending students into their adolescence, India International School Mangaf ‘Inner Wheel’ was privileged to have prearranged Dr. Anantha Priya Vaidya, Gynecologist from MOH Farwaniya as the guest speaker to address and equip the gathering. IISM’s yet another attempt to connect ‘Mothers and School’. Adolescence is a challenge, irrespective of the gender.
The paradigm shift in a person’s biological, cognitive, psychological and social transition from child-like to adult-like needs careful attention. Excitement and anxiety, discovery and bewilderment, breaking from the past and connecting to the future are some of the confusing experiences of an adolescent.
To begin with, Dr. Vaidya suggested that a positive family environment and a hospitable school atmosphere are the basic necessity for the dramatic changes of puberty. Girls get a head start on puberty while the boys catch up sooner on similar grounds of development.
Of menarche and thereafter were discussed in detail. Apart from healthy functioning of menstruation and its cycle, precaused and delayed puberty and growth/hormonal imbalance were dealt extensively. Having mostly women as her audience, teenage sexuality, pregnancy and menopause were subjected to satisfactory elucidation.
Health and hygiene, being active and nutrition are some of the tips on care attached to puberty. Most importantly, any concerns of severity was said to be notified immediately, regardless of embarrassment on consulting a doctor.
