PaulProf Paul Manuel is the Director of graduate program, MS Information Technology at the Kuwait University.

He hails from an agricultural village in Tirunelveli district. His forefathers were palm tree climbers. After experiencing the pathetic miserable lifestyle of palm tree climbers, his grandfather moved with his family to nearby Palayamkottai. Believing in education, all the seven children studied well. Four of them graduated PhD, one brother is an engineer in USA, one sister is a medical doctor and the eldest sister is a mathematician.

UNESCOPaul worked in several universities. He was promoted to full professor by Madurai Kamaraj University in 1998. In addition to University of Newcastle, he worked in Jordan and Saudi Arabia before joining Kuwait University in 2005.

However, he claims that his golden period was the time when he was the head of the department in Madurai Kamaraj University. Paul Manuel has handled several research and service projects funded by Kuwait University, AchievementKFAS and other funding agencies.

A notable project is “Brain Gain Initiative” which brings Arab and African universities under one umbrella called “Afro-Arab e-infrastructure”. This project was funded by UNESCO-HP. On the successful completion of this project, he was honored by UNESCO in Berlin Conference.

ProjectPaul is a sportsman and was an active hockey player in IIT Madras. He is another standing example that sports is not a diversion from academic achievements and on the other hand, it only complements academic activities. Paul recalls that when he joined in IIT Madras in 1980s, all his friends were from underdeveloped rural sectors of Tamil Nadu and the whole IIT was dominated by Tamil boys.

He disagrees with the Tamil Nadu politicians’ argument that the students from rural backgrounds are under-privileged in competitive exams such as NEET and JEE.

He has published more than 100 research papers in international scientific journals and more than 1000 top scientists have cited his research works. He received his M.S in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He obtained his Ph. D in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle, Australia. He got his first PhD in High Speed Computing from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

His wife is a medical doctor. His son graduated as BE in communication engineering from Sydney University. His daughter graduated from University of Western Sydney and his son-in-law is also an engineer. His family is now living in Sydney.

Paul regrets that it was his big mistake leaving India to make money.
